Step One: Project Appraisal and Pre-Briefing

The Project Appraisal and Pre-Briefing is a chance for you to connect with Studio James and for us to understand your project and what we can bring to your design goals. During this meeting we'll explore overall design and style, along with project details such as budgets, timelines and space planning.

You'll be sure to come away from the conversation with a new perspective and enthusiasm for what we can achieve together.

Step Two: Design Agreement and Scope

A formal design agreement outlining the scope, design fees and design timeline will be drafted and sent off for client review. This process ensures that everyone is on the same page in relation to expectations, and is a major part of our transparent pricing ethos.

If the project is a furniture and styling project, a full budget will also be submitted for approval. Once the design agreement is approved and deposit paid, the design process will begin.

Step Three: Site Measure and Briefing

In this meeting we get down to the nitty gritty of your design. We ask room related questions to help you (and us) understand how you want your new space to look, and most importantly, function.

Ideally this meeting is onsite, however, we are flexible and can work remotely if dimensions of the spaces are provided. Once this stage is complete, the real fun begins as we head back to the studio to create a custom design just for you.

Step Four: Design Presentation

The design meeting is where it all comes together. Having reviewed all the information gathered from the briefing, we've been hard at work designing, drawing, selecting, documenting and gathering. This culminates into a sit-down presentation of the design in a 3D visualisation (if that is part of the scope), as well as physical samples of all the finishes, so that you can get both a visual and tactile understanding of our proposal for your new home.

During this meeting we take detailed notes of your feedback and any changes requiring action. The final presentation is then emailed through for approval.

Step Five: Specification and Documentation

Once the design is approved, comprehensive plans are drawn up (including elevations, sections and details as required) for any built elements such as a new kitchen or joinery elements.

All fixtures and finishes are compiled into industry standard specification for your builder. If furnishings make up part of the scope, a separate furnishings specification is completed with all lead times, pricing and details for review. We are available to go through these plans and specifications with you in person to ensure your understanding of the finer details.

Step Six: Handover and Execution

All the plans and specifications are compiled together in one easy package for you to send out to your preferred builder, or (if required) we can suggest a few options for you.

Once your build is underway, we are available to consult at key milestones throughout the project. For a furnishings or decorating package we can offer a complete install service resulting in a turnkey service for our clients.

After something a little less involved?

Our Day-with-a-Designer is perfect for clients who aren't after the whole she-bang. It includes 6 hours of design work including an initial phone consultation, an in-home or personal shopping consultation and a follow-up "plan of action" for your project.

This allows clients to complete the work themselves with the benefit of our expertise and guidance. This package is perfect for those wanting to purchase their own furniture and project manage the process themselves.
